Module Aims

To explore a delimited repertory from the early 19th century (focussing on the late works of Beethoven) and to address relevant historical, critical and stylistic issues.

Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this module you should:
  • Be aware of the structural, formal, and technical features utilised by Beethoven and others in a representative selection of works.
  • Be receptive to freer-ranging or alternative analytical methods.
  • Be able to trace the influence of Beethoven in works of more recent composers.
  • Be able to place Beethoven’s late work within specific and general historical contexts.
  • Be able to engage critically with the works studied and develop critical techniques to apply to other works by Beethoven and his contemporaries.
Module Content
Historical, analytical, and critical examination of a set repertoire.
Methods of Teaching/Learning
10 one-hour lectures, 10 one-hour small group seminars and tutorial support.
 
Students should spend their own time in getting to know the repertoire and the literature surrounding it and in engaging critically with both.
