Module Aims
To explore a delimited repertory from the first half of the twentieth century and to address relevant historical, socio-political, and technical issues.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this module you should be able to:
  • describe the stylistic traits and characteristic structural procedures of the works examined
  • describe in some detail the stylistic development of the composers investigated
  • critique the major secondary literature on the composers studied
  • assess critically the significance of the composers studied within the context of early- and mid-twentieth-century musical developments in general
  • assess the significance of socio-political factors in the aesthetic stances of the composers investigated.
Module Content
Examination of set works from the delimited repertory within the context of musical and socio-musical developments in the first half of the twentieth century.
Methods of Teaching/Learning
  • 10 two-hour lectures
  • You should spend your own time in getting to know the repertoire and the literature surrounding it and in engaging critically with both
