Module Aims
  • To provide a detailed survey of changing perspectives in thought and aesthetics on music of the 19th century
  • To study a number of key texts in 19th century musical aesthetics
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this module you should be able to:
  • describe and explain principal areas of thought that are characteristic of the period
  • analyse the approaches taken by contemporaneous and subsequent writers about music, philosophy and aesthetics of the period
  • construct detailed critiques of key texts in musical aesthetics in the 19th century.
Module Content
The module will explore a selection of texts in aesthetics, criticism and history.
Methods of Teaching/Learning
10 two-hour lectures. The lecturer will introduce topics and texts which may, if appropriate, lead to class discussion.
