Module Overview
The purpose of this module is to enable students to build upon their knowledge of the style, aesthetics and history of romantic music.

Module Aims
• To develop an understanding of romantic aesthetics. • To develop an understanding of romantic musical style. • To develop knowledge of the romantic musical repertory. • To develop knowledge of the history of romantic music.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module you should be able to:
• Describe stylistic and aesthetic features of a range of romantic music. • Explain the relationship of selected works to wider historical and cultural issues.

Module Content
Lectures will introduce topics in romantic aesthetics, style and history by focussing on a series of musical case studies. These case studies may be drawn from the work of the following composers: • Beethoven • Schubert • Mendelssohn • Chopin • Schumann • Wagner • Liszt • Tchaikovsky • Brahms
Methods of Teaching/Learning
Each lecture will take the form of an exposition of the topic by the lecturer. This may lead to class discussion. Close listening to musical works/extracts will inform both the lectures and students’ individual learning.
