Three assessed assignments, all of them essays of not more than 3000 words, will be set. All must be completed; the best two will count towards the final mark

If this module is core for your programme, you will need to achieve a minimum of 40% for each Unit of Assessment. If the module is not core, you will need a weighted aggregate mark of 40%.
Module Overview
The purpose of this module is to enable you to develop your basic awareness of some of the most widely used modes of musicological thinking arising from your engagement with HE1 Understanding Music. The emphasis will be on acquiring a more sophisticated working knowledge of these modes and an understanding of their ideological bases.

Module Aims
• To develop your understanding of some of the main issues and literature in contemporary musicology.
• To prepare you for independent musicological work.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module you should be able to:

• Describe the aims of the musicological approaches studied.
• Describe ideological bases of the musicological approaches studied.
• Assess the usefulness and limitations of the approaches discussed for application to specific works and repertories.
• Apply the approaches discussed to specified works.

Transferable skills:

• Cogent contribution to group discussion.
• Cogent written argumentation.
• Deconstruction of problems.
Module Content
A number of case studies will be examined from the following broad perspectives: history, analysis, and reception.
Methods of Teaching/Learning
• An initial plenary session outlining the purpose and aims of the module (Class 1).
• Three groups of three seminars engaging with some of the principal contemporary musicological approaches via a series of case studies (Classes 2-10).
• A concluding plenary session drawing together skills and knowledge acquired during the seminars (Class 11).
• Directed reading and listening.
• Tutorials.
• Contributions to discussions in class.
