Courswork 1: a short written assignment of no more than 1000 words - 15%
Coursework 2: an essay of no more than 2000 words - 35%
A two-hour examination - 50%

Module Overview
The purpose of this module is to enable students to build upon their knowledge of issues of race, gender and politics in musical practice.
Prerequisites/Co-requisites
For BMus: none.
For BMus (Tonmeister): Understanding Music A.
Module Aims
To develop an understanding of issues of race, gender and politics in selected musical practices from 1800 to the present day
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module you should be able to:

• Write essays which relate musical practices to issues of race, gender and politics.
• Critique contemporaneous and secondary literature related to a series of musical case studies.

Transferable skills:

• Critical thinking.
• Cogent written argument.
Module Content
• Introduction to cultural theories of race and gender.
• Introduction to cultural politics.
• Consideration of a range of musical practices in relation to issues of race, gender and politics in Europe and/or North America from c.1800 to the present day.
Methods of Teaching/Learning
Lectures will consist of expositions from the lecturer which may lead into group discussion of musical case studies and/or critical writings. Classes may focus on musical case studies.
