Practical conducting test - 60%
Written assignment (2000 words) - 25%
Five 300 word written assignments (top four marks) - 15%
Module Overview
This module builds upon the fundamental principles of conducting, and introduces a more detailed and intense study of both materials and method.
Prerequisites/Co-requisites
Pre-requisite: You should normally have completed the short course in conducting run as part of the Performance 2a module
Module Aims
To develop your skills as a conductor to a level that prepares you to start leading rehearsals
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this module you should be able to:

• demonstrate a basic practical application of a physical, gestural technique for communicative conducting
• read and understand simple ensemble scores
• apply your skills to a limited range of music
• participate in informed discussion about a range of conducting issues

Module Content
Methods of Teaching/Learning
Study of basic beating patterns (including some for more complex metres).
Detailed study of the essentials of harmonic, textural and formal analysis (as appropriate to score learning).
Aural exploration of a range of different musical styles.
Shaping of musical structures through gesture.
