Module Aims
To develop historical and analytical understanding of the main styles of jazz from the late 19th century to the present day.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this module you should be able to:
  • identify significant jazz styles and understand their historical context
  • analyse and describe basic jazz forms and techniques
  • demonstrate ability to transcribe jazz solos

An outline of jazz history with reference to major individuals and ensembles. Methods of analysis and transcription.
