| Module Aims |
• To further inform your understanding of music (art-music in the Western tradition, popular music and world music) by examining significant sociological and cultural approaches to the subject. • To inform your musical perception through knowledge of the above approaches. • To further develop your study skills to the level required at HE2.

| Learning Outcomes |
By the end of the module you should be able to:
• Respond to several recorded excerpts referring to musical, aesthetic and socio-historical/cultural features as appropriate. • Write a clearly structured essay comparing two pieces of scholarly writing on music and referring to relevant repertoire.
Transferable skills:
• Written communication skills. • Ability to access the University’s learning resources including IT resources. • Work effectively as part of a team and meet your obligations to others. • Awareness of ethical issues in academic work such as acknowledgement of sources. • Demonstrate an awareness and understanding of other cultures. • Communicate clearly to individuals and groups.
