Coursework 3: an analytical exercise - 60%

Module Overview
The purpose of this module is to enable students to build on their knowledge of harmony and methods of analysis across a range of musical styles, in particular in more chromatic idioms.
Prerequisites/Co-requisites
None.
Module Aims
To develop further understanding of tonal harmony, including complex chromaticism.
To develop further understanding of types of popular music harmony.
To develop skills in applying analytical methods to a range of musical styles.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module you will be able to:

• Harmonise melodies in a range of musical styles, including chromatic idioms.
• Analyse complex harmonic progressions in a range of musical styles.

• Analytical thinking.
Module Content
• Introduction to harmonic theories and ideas of complex chromaticism.
• Demonstration of techniques in harmonising melodies and writing four-part harmony.
• Introduction to methods of analysing chromatic harmony
Methods of Teaching/Learning
Lectures will consist of a series of demonstrations by the lecturer, illustrated by recorded examples or at the keyboard.
