Module Aims |
- To further inform your understanding of music (art-music in the Western tradition, popular music and world music) by examining significant sociological and cultural approaches to the subject.
- To inform your musical perception through knowledge of the above approaches.

Learning Outcomes |
By the end of the module you should be able to:
- Respond to several recorded excerpts referring to musical, aesthetic and socio-historical/cultural features as appropriate.
- Write a clearly structured essay comparing two pieces of scholarly writing on music and referring to relevant repertoire.

Module Content |
- Basic principles and ideologies behind sociological and cultural approaches to the study of music
- Exemplification of these through selected examples
- Un-assessed group presentations

Methods of Teaching/Learning |
- Eleven two-hour sessions comprising lectures and un-assessed group presentations
- Resources available on Ulearn
- Module reader containing extracts from key texts is required
