To introduce analytical techniques applicable to tonal music |

Learning Outcomes |
Upon completion of this module you should be able to:
- analyse the phrase structures, motives, harmony, tonality and form of tonal music;
- write an analytical essay which is clearly structured and uses appropriate diagrams.

Module Content |
Examples will be drawn from the musical works of a range of composers from the 18th and 19th centuries. |

Methods of Teaching/Learning |
10 one-hour lectures. Lectures will consist of techniques and examples. In most weeks students will be assigned short exercises, which are not part of the assessment for this module but which form essential preparation for the following lecture. |
