Module Overview
Prerequisites/Co-requisites
Module Aims
This module ensures the examination of wider issues in midwifery and will prepare the student to provide clinical leadership in healthcare service delivery. The module addresses a variety of psychological, sociological and sexual health issues and the underpinning ethical principles. Emphasis will be placed on the application of research and critical reflection to issues of service delivery in the achievement of clinical effectiveness. This enables the students to debate controversial issues related to childbearing e.g. genetic modification of stem cells, screening methods and fertility technologies. Students will be supported in designing a research project.

The module focuses on the issues related to care of women and their families from a user perspective within the wider context of the public health. The opportunity is provided to explore several dimensions of practice development to include self management skills, managing others, the need for conducive environments for care, all underpinned by leadership and change management theory and midwifery supervision.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module the student should be able to:

Professional practice skills
1. demonstrate in a simulated setting the ability to safely insert a venous cannula.
2. begin to undertake suturing in a simulated environment
3. apply the NMC Midwives’ Rules and Codes of Practice to discussions of care delivery

Values and attitudes
1. understand how sexuality may affect women experiences in childbearing
2. recognise guidance from Nursing and Midwifery bodies in relation to professional conduct e.g. working as a team member, being a culturally sensitive group member
3. demonstrate understanding of how anti-discriminatory principles and equal opportunity polices can influence management and leadership in the provision of maternity services
4. demonstrate an understanding of moral and ethical dilemmas involved in providing care

Knowledge and understanding
1. demonstrate an understanding of how Acts of Parliament (Human Rights Act, Children Act, Mental Health Act etc) impact on women and their families and can influence working practices
2. analyse the relationship between psychosocial factors and patho-physiological factors both during the childbearing experience and as they relate to men’s and women’s health e.g. sexual health, drug misuse, family planning and the menopause
3. demonstrate a critical understanding of psychological and psychiatric problems related to pregnancy and the role of the midwife in relation to these
4. analyse national and local influences on childbearing and debate contemporary and controversial issues in practice e.g. stem cell collection.
5. critically and systematically analyse evidence from primary sources and relate these to midwifery practice
6. demonstrate the ability to use research evidence and knowledge of practice to design a research project and to identify research needed to enable practice development
7. critically examine the concepts of monitoring, audit, evaluation and clinical governance and how these relate to client safety, risk and change management and client choice
8. demonstrate an understanding of managed care pathways and other means of improving communication between midwives, social workers, psychiatric teams etc
9. evaluate the role of supervision in enabling professional development and maintaining standards of care
