Module Overview

The dissertation module is intended to provide students with an opportunity to select a research topic relating to an aspect of film studies which has engaged their own particular interests, and to explore it in detail through guided self-study.

None.
Module Aims

The aims in summary are:

 

                                                    

 

  • To facilitate the completion of an in-depth study of an aspect of film studies

     

  • To develop and carry out research methodology in film studies

     

  • To foster the skills and attitudes necessary for independent research over a sustained period

     

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module the knowledge and skills the student will have developed include: 

 

Knowledge and Understanding

 

·         An in-depth appreciation of a topic related to the course 

 

·         An understanding of the principles of research methodology in film studies

 

 

Skills

 

  • The ability to select an appropriate research topic and to formulate a meaningful research question in film studies

     

  • The ability to conduct a literature search

     

  • The ability to conduct independent research or survey of existing research using a range of sources

     

  • The ability to demonstrate critical and analytical skills appropriate to level 3 work

     

  • The ability to structure and sustain a coherent argument over 9000 words

     

Module Content

This will depend on the topic selected by each individual student.

 

Methods of Teaching/Learning
Independent research and supervision throughout the year. Students will spend up to 6 hours, usually in half hour sessions with their supervisor.
