Module Overview |
This module allows students to build on the knowledge and skills, gained at level one, in developing an understanding of key practical aspects of audio visual media production and provides an opportunity to present ideas and analysis in the form of a video documentary. |

50% or above for MFC1009. |

Module Aims |
- To develop students understanding of the documentary production process with particular emphasis on the development of ideas and documentary research
- To introduce students to a range of considerations associated with fact based video production including, permissions and clearances, copyright issues and ethical considerations
- To build students skills base in camera, sound recording and editing
- To allow students to embody their theoretical and analytical understanding of the documentary form in practice
- To develop skills of responsibility and teamwork to a high level

Learning Outcomes |
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
Demonstrate a sound understanding of working with current video location equipment including cameras, sound recording equipment, lighting equipment and editing software
Demonstrate an awareness of a range of considerations associated with fact based video production including, permissions and clearances, copyright issues and ethical considerations
Demonstrate an understanding of differing approaches to documentary production and how the documentary form can be used to present ideas and analysis
Take a complex project from concept to realisation working effectively as a member of a production team

The Documentary Camera: Approaches to recording actuality and the role of the camera in different modes of documentary
Developing the Documentary Treatment: An introduction to research methods for documentary
Composing with Light: Basic lighting set ups; colour temperature and filters Plus ‘Lighting can Kill’ health and safety points
Sound Treatment: Developing sound recording techniques and exploring the role of sound in the documentary context
Access and Ethics: Practical and theoretical considerations in production planning and research plus an introduction to clearances and permissions for documentary production
Managing Documentary Post Production: Using transcripts, organizing clips and techniques in building structure
