Assessment Pattern

Coursework: (65% of the assessment)

 

Solo Assessment 1. A solo performance of about 5 minutes duration at a performance seminar in the final part of the 1st semester. Choice of repertoire to be agreed with the Module Convenor and instrumental tutor. (15%)

 

  Participation in conducted ensembles  (30%)

 

  Participation in unconducted ensembles (15%)

 

  Concert management duties (5%)

 

 

Examination: (35% of the assessment)

 

Solo Assessment 2. A solo performance not less than 5 minutes duration at a performance seminar in the final part of the 2nd semester. Choice of repertoire to be agreed with the Module Convenor and instrumental tutor. (35%)

Criteria of Assessment for Level HE1 Performance modules

 

 

Performance at Level HE1 equates to an ability to show instrumental or vocal competence of a level in excess of ABRSM Grade 8.  At this level, some of the following qualities should be exhibited:

 

 

Solo performance:

 

 

  • fluency and control of expression

     

  • communication of your awareness of the music’s structure and idiom

     

  • appropriate consideration of stylistic issues

     

  • technical control

     

  • accuracy

     

  • sound quality and tone projection

     

  • commitment to both the music performed and to the act and manner of performance

     

  • establishing a rapport with the audience.

     

 

Ensemble performance – in addition to the above criteria, the following also apply:

 

 

  • effectiveness of your role within group contexts

     

  • punctuality, reliability and professionalism in all rehearsal situations.

     

 

A mark above 70% (first class pass) will normally be awarded for a performance which meets a majority of the qualities listed. Marks in excess of 80% are awarded only to performances which display excellence in most of the qualities listed.

 

 

A mark in the range 60-69% (upper second class) will normally be awarded for a performance which meets many of the qualities listed.

 

 

A mark of 50-59% (lower second class) will normally be awarded for a performance which meets three or more of the qualities listed.

 

 

A mark of 40-49% (third class pass) will normally be awarded for a performance which displays one or two of the qualities listed, but at a low level.

 

 

A mark of 35-39% (high fail) will normally be awarded for a performance which significantly fails to display most of the qualities listed.

 

 

A mark below 35% (fail) will normally be awarded for a performance which fails to display any of the qualities listed.

To enable you to develop instrumental/vocal expertise as both soloist and ensemble musician.

Learning Outcomes
By the end of this module you should be able to:
  • show enhanced instrumental/vocal ability and confidence as a solo performer and in ensembles
  • satisfy the Criteria of Assessment for Level HE1 Performance Modules
  • display independence of learning
  • identify and meet practice targets
Module Content

Individual tuition and experience in performance as soloist, in ensemble, and orchestral/band/choral. Group and individual coaching, workshops and rehearsals.

Methods of Teaching/Learning
  • regular individual tuition with your instrumental teacher;
  • attendance at, and participation in, concerts, workshops and designated Performance Seminars as required as both a soloist and as an ensemble player
  • tutorials with the Module Convenor;
  • concert management duties.
