Assessment Pattern
The assessment is made jointly by the visiting tutor and the placement supervisor on the second visit at the end of the placement, based on the student’s work and performance during the placement. A range of competencies will be assessed but particular emphasis will be placed on technical skills used during the placement. The log kept during the placement will also be assessed.
No reassessment is normally possible without repeating the placement.

Module Aims

This module gives the student the opportunity to experience a professional working environment and to improve their skills in relation to this.

Learning Outcomes

The learning outcomes are as follows:

  • To develop and use the technical expertise required for the placement
  • To learn to work independently and responsibly.
  • To develop effective skills in some aspect of research or development, programming, problem solving, financial or business analysis, modelling or statistical analysis.
  • To develop effective interpersonal and communication skills
  • To observe the practical application of the knowledge gained at University
  • To produce a log of the personal and professional development experience during the placement
  • To observe and learn about processes and methods which do not form part of the University programme
Module Content

The placement will take place in a research environment or in a company that makes significant use of mathematical skills. The student will be required to use existing technical skills and to develop new ones within the work environment. A log of the students’ personal and professional development must be kept for the duration of the placement.
