Module Overview

This module explores the principles and concepts of planning and development in a variety of situations and scales as well as the associated policy dimensions.  

It examines tourism policies, the creation of tourism development plans and the regulatory mechanisms, and the application of these in a variety of locations and political structures throughout the world. 

It also focuses on the issues raised by tourism including evaluation of the impacts and the ways in which these find expression in policy, development and planning decisions in various settings including in relation to poverty alleviation in less developed countries. In doing this it provides an understanding of the relationships and interactions between the public and private sectors in the development process

Module Aims

It examines toursim policies, the creation of tourism development plans and regulatory mechanisms, and the application of these in a variety of locations and political structures throughout the world.

In doing this it provides an understanding of the relationships and interactions between the public and private sectors in the development process.

Learning Outcomes

On succesful completion of this module the students will be able to:

  • Understand the nature of and interrelationships between tourism development, planning and policies
  • Have a critical awarness of the organisational structure created by government for tourism
  • Critically evaluate the issues behind development, planning, and policies in tourism
  • Understand the creation of tourism development plans
  • Understand the principles of site and location selection
  • Understand the ways in which tourism raises issues (economic, social, environmental) in a range of different settings and be familiar with related impact assesment
  • Be familar with the implications of different types of tourism and different impacts for policy, development and planning decisions.
  • Critique and evaluate the relationships between the implications of tourism in different settings and the public and private sector decisions.
  • Recognise and appreciate how to deal with conflicting priorities.
    Understand the background and nature of tourism in less developed countries.
  • Evaluate tourism's role in poverty alleviation.
