In order to achieve the threshold standard for the award of credits for this module, the student must meet the following criteria related to the learning outcomes described above:

Appreciate the theories, conceptual frameworks and methodologies that underpin management information systems

Demonstrate the ability to synthesise business and ICT concepts within an analytical context

Demonstrate awareness of information and communication technologies (current and emerging) and their impact on organisational/business performance (foresight)

Demonstrate evidence of background reading and research of the academic and practitioner literature relevant to management information systems.

Module Overview |
The module aims to raise and equalise the level the information management knowledge of all incoming students. It also provides an integrative introduction to all other modules in this master programme. |

Module Aims |
This module aims to cover the issues concerning the management of information and information systems at the intermediate level. The course starts with the assumption that the student has an MIS background at the undergraduate level, such as provided by, for example, the Laudon & Laudon textbook on Management Information Systems. Topics include introductions to information strategy, information systems project management, and information systems implementation |

On successful completion of this module the student will:

have a basic understanding of the concepts in information strategy, project management, and information systems implementation.

have a clear overview of how these concepts are interrelated with each other, and related to other fields of management

have an understanding of how and why the rest of the MSc MIS is structured the way it currently is

Methods of Teaching/Learning |
The teaching and learning strategy is designed to: cultivate an understanding of the main issues and challenges; provide a coherent conceptual framework; develop a critical awareness of the various approaches to the strategic and operational management of ICT in organisations.
The teaching and learning methods include: One two hour lecture every week as well as several student exercises. Guest lecturers will be sought to cover appropriate contemporary subjects. Group presentations will also be given in the lecture periods to facilitate discussion on real organisations. Web-based learning support and electronic resources will be provided. |
