Module Overview

The full utilization human assets is increasingly being recognized as one of the key factors in the success organizations and firms are becoming far more strategic in the management of their people and adopting ever more complex employment relationships. Managing Human Assets is a core module for the MBA programme provided by the School of Management, and is intended to provide a firm basic grounding in the management of human resources from an asset-based approach.

Module Aims

The principal aim of this module is to provide practicing and future managers, whether generalist or specialist HR, a full understanding of the myriad theoretical and practical aspects of managing an organization’s human resources. The module explores the role of HRM in the organizational and broader environmental context and integrates the psychological, sociological and economic aspects of the subject.

Learning Outcomes
  • Understand link between functional strategy and corporate strategy in relation to the management of human assets.
  • Understand and apply theoretical models and concepts concerned with the effective management of human assets. 
  • Diagnose individual and organizational development needs and propose appropriate strategies and interventions. 
  • Synthesize competing theoretical perspectives and recommend appropriate strategies for motivating and rewarding employees.

1.        Evaluating HRM in the organizational context, understanding the psychological contract and managing worker expectations
Theoretical aspects of Human Asset Management
2.        Understanding organizational structures and cultures and the complexity of the individual/organization interaction
3.        Understanding group dynamics and leading for successful outcomes and motivating people for high performance and satisfaction
 
Practical aspects of Human Asset Management
4.        Managing individual and organizational performance and achieving effective reward management and promoting the wage/effort bargain
5.                  Labour market theory and practice, costing wages and labour turnover
6.                  Effective recruitment and selection for maximum person-organization ‘fit’

8.                  Developing human capital: strategies and policies
