Module Overview

Company Financial Reporting provides an opportunity for students following the Accounting and Financial Management pathway, and others interested (Business Management degree students) and perhaps considering a career in Financial Management, Accounting, Banking or some such field, to learn about the rules and practices in company financial reporting, and about the theoretical ideas behind these rules and practices.  The focus is on internationally accepted rules and practices, rather than just those in the or US.

Financial Accounting/ Tax – Auditing 

Module Aims

To provide a substantial course in Company Financial Reporting at a level appropriate to Level 2-3 of an undergraduate degree in Accounting and Financial Management and Business Management studies of a generalist nature with an emphasis on International Accounting Standards. 

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module the students will be able to: 
·              Apply the learning outcomes of the Level 1 and 2 modules in Financial Accounting and Management Accounting and, to an understanding of the annual reports of listed companies. 
·              Understand the application of International Financial Reporting Standards in the preparation of such annual reports. 
·              Appreciate the role of company financial reporting in the context of international capital markets. 
·              Understand the links between company law and financial reporting requirements,  in an international context. 
·              At an introductory level, to understand and apply the links between accounting data and company valuation, through the use of ratio analysis and benchmarking. This topic will be pursued at a more advanced level in the Level 3 course ‘Financial Statement Analysis’.
·              Apply information technology (internet, financial databases, spreadsheets), to obtaining and analysing company financial reports. 

Module Content

·              Annual reports of listed companies.
·              The application of International Financial Reporting Standards in the preparation of such annual reports. 
·              The role of company financial reporting in the context of international capital markets. 
·              The links between company law and financial reporting requirements,  in an international context. 
·              The links between accounting data and company valuation, through the use of ratio analysis and benchmarking. 
·              Using information technology (internet, financial databases, spreadsheets), to obtaining and analysing company financial reports. 

Methods of Teaching/Learning

The teaching and learning strategy in CFR is designed to provide, within the limits of available teaching resources, a course that contains all the basic elements of a specialised module on Reporting of Accounting Results on the Annual Reports of both Public Listed firms (plc’s) and private firms (ltd’s) within the framework of a generic Business Management degree. 
The teaching and learning methods include 
·              The provision of tutorial seminars to supplement lectures. 
·              Practical exercises 
·              Coursework focussed on problem solving exercises and technically  demanding case studies 
·              Making lecture notes available to students 
·              Support of lecture material by directed reading in selected textbooks, etc. 
·              ‘Open door’ policy of tutor to help students requesting it
