Qualifying Condition(s)

 

 

To achieve the threshold standard for the award of credits for this module, the student must accumulate a minimum of 40% from the two units of assessment.

 

 

 

 

Assessment Criteria

 

 

·              Given an Accounting and Finance business scenario, explain the information system (IS) implications and make suggestions for business improvement through the use of information technology (IT).

 

 

·              Given an accounting information system, describe the basic data structure of the system and provide solutions for managing the data.

 

 

Alternative Assessment

 

 

If an individual student fails the coursework and subsequently the module, he or she will be given an individual project assignment as the re-assessment. The deliverable is a written report (maximum 3500 words) that covers the key skills assessed in the group project. 

 

 

Module Overview

  

 

This module provides an introduction to the fundamentals of Management Information Systems (MIS) for Accounting and Finance students. The module covers the use of accounting information systems in both traditional business scenarios and new emerging fields. Special attention is paid to the major accounting information systems in use at small, medium, and large enterprises.

Module Aims

This module aims to provide Accounting and Finance students with a management perspective of information systems and IT. Students should gain:

  •   A basic understanding of MIS for business with an emphasis on information management. 
  • Knowledge of the underlying data structure of information systems and their different forms.
  •  Skills of applying MIS solutions to business challenges.
  •   Awareness of emerging IS applications and the associated business  models. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module the students will be able to:

 

·              Understand various types of information systems at different managerial levels.

 

·              Develop a critical awareness of emerging ITs and their impact on business organizations.

 

·              Comprehend how business data are captured, processed, and presented by information systems.

 

·              Perform basic data analysis tasks with Microsoft Excel and Access to support business decision making.

Methods of Teaching/Learning

·              Two-hour lecturing session for 11 weeks.

·              Two-hour lab tutorial session for 6 weeks.

·              Learning and assessment activity on ULearn.

·              Student project presentations.

 

 

 

The teaching and learning strategy is designed to:

·              Enable students to gain theoretical and practical knowledge in MIS.

·              Illustrate available IT tools and their usage for business information management.

·              Demonstrate the significance of IS/IT in supporting business processes.

 

 

 

Assessment Strategy

 

 

 

 

 

 

The assessment is a combination of a group project, an individual final exam, and a series of ULearn-based assignments for self assessment. The assessment methods and weighting are detailed below:

 

 

 

 

 

 

Group Project        50%All Accounting and Finance students must participate in a major group project that provides an opportunity to apply MIS concepts and skills to real life problems. The deliverables include a written report (maximum 7000 words) and an online video presentation (10 minutes).

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Final Examination         50%The exam will cover all aspects of the module. Length of exam: 1 hour.
