Module Overview

This module is the first part of the School of Management Professional Development Thread .  The content of the Business Communication Skills module has far-reaching implications for the student’s future scholarly work, vacation internships, professional training placement and graduate employability.

Module Aims

To ensure that students are able to develop the transferable skills, attitudes and abilities that will enable them to study successfully and to function effectively in modern society with a specific focus on Information Communication Technology and Presentations.

 

 

To introduce students to the personal and professional development process that is integral to the School of Management undergraduate programmes. 

 

 

Learning Outcomes

 

On successful completion of this module the students will be able to:

 

1.      Understand the basic concepts of information communication technology as used in business world

 

2.      Display basic competence in word processing and presentation software with special reference to business documents, correspondence and communication

 

3.      Design and take an active delivery role in group presentations.

 

4.      Become more effective, independent and confident self-directed learners

 

5.      Understand how they are learning and relate their learning to a wider context

 

6.      Reflect on their role within a group and their contribution to its performance

 

7.      Improve their general skills for study and career management

 

8.      Articulate personal goals and evaluate progress towards their achievement

Methods of Teaching/Learning

The Learning and Teaching Strategy of this module has been designed to help students of all abilities to engage in an effective skills development process whilst enhancing their employability.

 

 

Students are encouraged to:

 

·        assess their current skills (both study-related, IT and presentations),

 

·        identify areas of weakness and strengths

 

·        take advantage of appropriate learning opportunities from within this module’s activities and the wider university

 

·        demonstrate competence

 

·        and reflect on their progress

·        Small group workshops/tutorials

 

o       to develop basic understanding of and competence in Word, Powerpoint and group working

 

·        Lectures

 

o       to develop basic understanding of ICT as used in the business world, employability and Personal & Professional Development processes
