Module Overview
This module introduces students to concepts and theories underpinning discussions about multicultural societies. It looks at theories of culture and identity and includes an overview of key concepts of intercultural communication. Models and policies of integration in multicultural societies will be examined and compared. The module also highlights the linguistic means required to discuss sociological concepts, to present research findings in presentations, and to evaluate critically readings and research on multiculturalism.
Prerequisites/Co-requisites
Successful completion of HE2 or equivalent
Module Aims
  • To encourage students to reflect critically on the issues surrounding the current debate on national identity and multiculturalism.
  • To enable students to analyse and evaluate the social, political and cultural consequences of migrations and their impact on national policies and theories of integration.
  • To develop a personal awareness of cultural perceptions and intercultural communication.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module students will be able to: 
  • evaluate and contextualise the causes and consequences of transnational migration;
  • assess connections between political and legal frameworks, national identities and the lives of minority groups;
  • adopt a comparative perspective on other cultures and their own
  • apply theories to their own research and analysis of multicultural societies
Module Content
The following areas are indicative of topics to be covered:
 
  • theories of culture, identity and difference;
  • conceptions of multiculturalism;
  • political influences on integration,
  • the causes of migration;
  • aspects of integration;
  • citizenship and national identity;
  • models of multicultural rights;
  • European and global perspectives;
  • representations of multiculturalism in the media;
  • the role of education;
  • multilingualism;
  • the literature of multiculturalism.
Methods of Teaching/Learning
Teaching will be in small group seminars. Student presentations will form the basis of discussions in class. Case studies and critical incidents will be introduced to encourage discussion and reflection.
