Module Overview |
This is a Level 2 optional module for all language students, taught in Semester 1. Teaching is in English and attendance is compulsory. |

Successful completion of HE1 or equivalent. |

Module Aims |
To examine language as a social phenomenon, promoting the students’ awareness of socio-cultural issues in different languages. |

Learning Outcomes |
On successful completion of this module students will:
- have acquired the basic vocabulary needed to describe and discuss sociolinguistic issues;
- have gained awareness of general sociolinguistic concepts;
- be able to analyse texts using sociolinguistic tools.

Module Content |
The following areas are indicative of topics to be covered:
• Language variation and change; • Language as a social marker; • Dialects and nation; • Power and politeness.

Methods of Teaching/Learning |
Classes will include lectures and seminars, where students will prepare short assignments and items for class discussion or online. Attendance is compulsory and class participation is essential. Importance is attached to practical data analysis. |
