Module Overview

The module aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the role of the European Community in the arena of global trade and to enable them to appreciate the current state of the Communities’ activities in the external field.

Module Aims

The main aims of this module are:

 

  • To explore, contextualise and understand the legal framework of the European Union’s external trade;

     

  • To analyse the role of the European Court of Justice and its rulings in this field;

     

To the interaction between the EU and other International Organisations.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

 

 

 

SUBJECT-SPECIFIC

 

  • Describe, analyse and explain the development of the EU’s external trade policies;

     

  • Understand the interaction between actors and policy areas;

     

  • Apply theoretical perspectives to the particular case of EU external trade;

     

  • Compare and contrast the EU’s powers in different areas of external trade.

     

Module Content
  • Introduction.

     

  • The international personality of the European Union.

     

  • The general legal framework of EU external trade policy: the Common Commercial Policy; the problem of external competence; the role of the institutions; the Common Foreign and Security Policy and Commercial Policy Agreements.

     

  • The system of Community agreements.

     

  • The impact of the World Trade Organisation on EC law and the Doha Round.
