Module Overview

This module is intended to equip students with a thorough appreciation of the complexities of the legal framework, which underpins the economic integration fundamental to the establishment of the Single Market within the European Union. The emphasis is on the substantive law of the European Community, in particular the practical application of the Four Freedoms and the flanking policies. The role of the European Court of Justice and the various approaches to legal integration will be studied in depth.

Module Aims
The main aims of this module are:
  • To explore, contextualise and understand the legal framework of the European Union’s Single Market;
  • To analyse the role of the European Court of Justice and its rulings in this field;

To provide a basis for more focused study in the legal dimension of European integration.

Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

  • Describe, analyse and explain the development of the EU’s Single Market;
  • Understand the interaction between actors and policy areas;
Apply theoretical perspectives to the particular case of the Single Market.

  • Introduction: the establishment of the internal market
  • Free movement of goods: tariff barriers and fiscal barriers
  • Free movement of goods: non-tariff barriers and measures equivalent to quantitative restrictions
  • Free movement of payments and capital
  • Free movement of persons and citizenship of the Union
  • The right of establishment
