Module Overview

This module is a core module for QLD status.  Regard should therefore be had to the level 2 module in Criminal Law.  At level 3 emphasis will also be placed upon current legal issues including proposals for reform.

Module Aims

The aims of this module are the same as those for the level 2 module but greater emphasis will be placed upon critical thinking and an awareness of current legal problems.

Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the student will have attained the same knowledge and skills as students of the level 2 module with the additional ability to debate current legal problems.
Module Content
The module is a core module and contains the same material as the level 2 module, with additional emphasis placed upon the work of the Law Commission.
Methods of Teaching/Learning

One 2 Hour Lecture (weekly) plus one 1 Hour Tutorial (fortnightly).

The lectures will provide an overview of the topics to enable the students to understand the essential principles of each topic and their significance. The lectures and lecture outlines introduce students to cases and texts to enable them to deepen their knowledge of the topics.  Some topics will be treated in more depth than others and this will be reflected in the subject weighting in the examination.

The tutorials are intended to be occasions when students can demonstrate their knowledge and ability to apply it to tutorial questions set prior to the tutorial.  The tutorials are designed to be student-led.

The teaching and learning strategy is designed to stimulate private study using primary and secondary sources, both paper-based and electronic.  The aim of the strategy is to develop an understanding and critical awareness English criminal law and proposals for reform.
