Module Overview
This module is designed for L2 students preparing o go n a placement and for work after university. Preparatory meetings and workshops are organised by Professional Training co-ordinators.
Attendance is compulsory.

Successful completion of HE1
Module Aims
The module aims to:
 
  • support students in their search for a placement that supports their career aims
  • provide opportunities for students to interact with employers and industry professionals and
  • develop their understanding of recruitment processes and employer needs.
  • ensure students have a clear understanding of the responsibilities of all parties involved in the placement year and their rights and responsibilities in relation to relevant laws governing the employment/placement
prepare students so that they can maximise their learning opportunities and gain full benefit from all their working experiences whilst on professional placement in industry.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the module, students will:
 
  • have gained a thorough understanding of the department’s placement system and of the requirements of entering a work environment;
  • be able to communicate their skills in their target languages, both orally and in writing; 
  • be familiar with job application processes in the countries of their target languages;
  • be able to demonstrate graduate job-seeking and job-acquiring skills relevant to their chosen industry sector
  • be able to identify personal strengths and weaknesses in relation to placement providers’ needs
  • be able to identify key personal and professional development objectives in relation to their PTY
  • be able to understand how to make the most of the PTY experience including the assessment assignments
Module Content
Students attend a series of meetings group and individual meetings and workshops organised by the department, designed to prepare L2 students prior to going on placement and de-brief L3 students upon their return.
Methods of Teaching/Learning
Preparation sessions will cover the following topics:
  • placement opportunities
  • presentations from final year students
  • personal development planning and skills
  • intercultural communication and business culture
  • on-placement support through ULearn
  • health and safety in the workplace and your responsibilities
Selected Texts/Journals
Sessions will be delivered in the form of lectures and workshop. Students will also have one – to-one meetings with Professional Communication Co-ordinators. Students will be expected to attend regularly, prepare for the sessions if required and participate actively. Students will maintain a pre-placement portfolio consisting of developmental and reflective tasks relating closely to the workshops and lectures and the reports by L3 students.There will be opportunities for self and peer assessment.
