Module Overview
This module is designed for students to reflect on their placement experience in writing, and evaluate the year abroad in terms of personal and professional development.
Prerequisites/Co-requisites
Completion of work placement.
Module Aims
This module aims to:
 
  • Evaluate the placement experience as seen by the student;
  • Assess student acquisition of work and life skills, particularly self-presentation and communication skills;
  • Encourage student self reflection and critical self assessment;
  • Evaluate the suitability of the placement in terms of personal development planning;
  • Enhance ability to deal with unfamiliar problems
  • Develop report writing skills in the target language.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
  • Reflect in writing on their placement experience;
  • Evaluate the work placement in terms of personal development planning;
  • Demonstrate self-awareness and the acquisition of new skills and knowledge;
  • Demonstrate abilty to deal with the unfamiliar and unexpected;
  • Identify areas of personal and professional growth;
  • Communicate in writing their understanding of their role in the company or organisation;
  • Comment on aspects of intercultural communication;
  • Synthesise academic study and workplace experience;
  • Produce a coherent report in the target language.
Module Content
At the end of the placement, students produce a 1,500 word report in the language of the placement country, covering the whole placement experience. In their reports, students describe the company or organisation providing the placement, the tasks undertaken and the responsibilities given. They comment on the development of key skills in terms of personal development planning, and the academic work undertaken to prepare for the final year at university. Students are also encouraged to reflect on cultural differences experienced during the year abroad, and the improvement of their foreign language skills. Guidelines for writing the report are available to students throughout the year on the departmental ULearn website.
