Module Overview
This module meets the career needs of today’s students of Hospitality, Retail and Tourism (HRT). It offers the opportunity to build on the language skills and socio-cultural awareness acquired in French Phase 1 or equivalent.

Module Aims
·         To develop communicative competence at a post-beginners level in the four language skills (reading, writing, speaking and listening)
·         To instil relative proficiency in handling a range of basic grammatical structures.
·         To develop generic and HRT-specific vocabulary
·         To develop further socio-cultural issues relevant to the French-speaking world.
Learning Outcomes
·         Understand the gist and detail of short extracts in the spoken language in a limited range of situations
·         Communicate and respond orally with confidence, in predictable situations, using the appropriate register
·         Understand the gist and detail of language written on familiar topics
·         Write short pieces in the target language using a limited range of vocabulary and structures
·         Develop further awareness of some main aspects of French culture
Module Content

Grammar
·         Consolidation of present, immediate future and perfect tenses
·         Most common irregular verbs in present
·         Most common past participles for perfect tense
·         Introduction to the imperfect (only with the verbs être and faire in the third person singular)
·         Future tense (regular and key irregular)
·         Consolidation of the imperative
·         Revision of adjectives
·         Adverbs (basic)
·         Recognition of basic pronouns
 
Students are encouraged to self-asses their progress and to map their linguistic competence against the descriptors of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).
Methods of Teaching/Learning
The teaching and learning methods include three hours of language seminars per week plus one hour of online work. The course will be taught communicatively, with emphasis on training in listening and speaking by means of group work, such as role play and presentation in the language. Teaching will be in the target language as far as possible, and material drawn from a variety of sources, including audiovisual and online content. Consolidation of learning will be achieved through the practice of language skills inside and outside the classroom, including computer-assisted language learning. The development of independent learning strategies, research skills and transferable skills is supported by the use of learning technology.
