Module Overview
Cinema has a special place in French cultural life. This introduction will prepare the students before they go on placement in their third year, and will give them a global view of cultural and social life in France.
Prerequisites/Co-requisites
A pass in FRE1045 or equivalent
Module Aims
To familiarise students with French cinema by learning history and themes relating to cinema, and analysing French movies.
Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module, students will:

  • Have watched different kinds of movies and extracts and practised their listening skills;
  • Have learned how to analyse and criticise French movies;
  • Have learned how to write film reviews;
  • Be able to appreciate the importance of the impact of cinema in French society;
  • Have enhanced their knowledge of French society;
  • Have improved their intercultural understanding.

  • French culture and society through the cinema
  • The successes of French movies
  • The French cinema industry
  • Movie analysis:

  • Psychological movies
Methods of Teaching/Learning
Two contact hours per teaching week in semester 2. Interactive Lectures/Seminars: students will be expected to participate in class discussions, and to write film reviews outside class.
