Assessment Pattern
The assessment strategy is designed to demonstrate the students’ achievement of the learning outcomes by setting oral and written tasks and tests. The assessment will be formative and summative.
 
The assessment methods include ongoing assessment by the tutor, taking into account the students’ contributions to class and oral work as well as their fulfilment of weekly homework tasks, which will comprise 50% of the mark, and an end-of-module test, also 50%, comprising a writing, reading, listening and oral element, all equally weighted.

Module Aims
  • To develop basic communicative competence
  • To instil a basic proficiency in handling grammatical structures
  • To give some insight into socio-cultural issues relevant to the country in question
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the students will be able to:
  • understand the gist and detail of language spoken at a basic level
  • communicate and respond confidently to simple information orally
  • understand the gist and detail of written language at a basic level
  • write simple messages and letters

Methods of Teaching/Learning
The teaching and learning strategy is designed to promote the development of the four language skills (speaking, writing, reading and listening), the acquisition of knowledge of the foreign culture and knowledge of the particular language associated with the students’ specialism.
 
The teaching and learning methods include three hours of language classes per week which will be taught communicatively incorporating individual presentations and pair and group work. Teaching will be in the target language as far as possible, and material drawn from a variety of sources, including audio and video tapes, will be exploited. Consolidation of learning will be by the practice of language skills inside and outside the classroom, using a variety of means, including computer-assisted language learning.
