Module Overview

Theoretical and applied economic and public policy issues are addressed. The module studies the economics of integration primarily within the European Union (EU). Attention is also given to EU trade and aid policies for Eastern Europe and for Less Developed Countries. A contrast with the problems of transition in the context of EU eastern enlargement is included. The module will equip students to understand general models of economic integration and to account for the particular route taken by economic integration and economic policies in Europe over recent decades.

Module Aims
The main aims of this module are to:
  • Explore, contextualise and understand the economic dimensions of European integration;
Provide a basis for more focused study of this subject.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
 
SUBJECT-SPECIFIC
  • display an understanding of the key theoretical issues involved in economic integration within the EU;
  • apply this theory to the questions of EU enlargement to include transition economies and to the extension of preferential trade and aid agreements to the ACP/ other third world countries;
  • analyse the key policy issues to which closer economic integration give rises;
GENERAL
  • display an ability to analyse data as part of an assessment of these theories and policies;
demonstrate research skills in finding and analysing supporting material from contemporary documentation.

  • The theory of a customs union, common market and economic union.
  • Economics of 1992: the Single European Market.
  • Common agricultural policy (CAP): objectives and reform.
  • Preferential trade policies for LDCs.
  • The European Monetary System (EMS), monetary union and economic convergence.
  • Analyses of the impact of EU membership on the UK.

Economic transformation in Eastern Europe and EU Policy.
