Module Overview
This module provides an introduction to the field of petroleum production, with a focus on the surface engineering and operations.
Prerequisites/Co-requisites
None
Module Aims
The module aims to provide the students from process engineering programmes with an introduction to petroleum production and a systematic understanding of surface operations which have close relations with process engineering.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the module, you will be able to:
 
·         Identify the main petroleum products and production facilities.
·         Identify and explain the important technical areas of surface operations.
·         Explain and apply methods of the conceptual design of important separation processes.
·         Explain and analyze the economic aspect of surface operations.
Recognise and apply the tools and principles for the safe design and operation of surface processes and systems.
Module Content
Introduction: General description on oil facilities, gas/condensate facilities, onshore and offshore operation; Product specification of crude oil, gas, NGLs, and LPG; Stage separation.
Production Facility Schemes: Typical flow sheets (piping and instruments), Instrument control loops, Water Injection.
Fluid Separation Design and Technology: Principle of separation, Design criteria and sizing of the separators; Separator Types; Separator components.
Equilibrium Flash Calculations:Typical composition of well fluids; Phase behaviour of hydrocarbons; Vapour/liquid equilibrium; Methods of performing flash calculations.
Processing and Conditioning of Gas Condensates and Natural Gases: Gas sweetening; Gas dehydration; Hydrocarbon dew point control; Stabilisation and fractionation

 
Hydrocarbon Transportation and Storage: Design of liquid pipeline systems; Design of gas pipeline systems; Prime movers; Pipeline construction; Storage of oil, LPG, LNG and gas;
Project Economics: Estimating capital cost; Drilling cost; Operating cost; Discounted cash flow; Life cycle cost; NPV and IRR; Cost risk and Monte Carlo simulation; Contingency
Safe Design and Operation: HAZID and HAZOP; Fail safe design; Pressure codes; Hazardous area designation; Modification; Hot and cold work; Permit to work system; Vessel Entry.
