Module Overview
Prerequisites/Co-requisites

A sound basic knowledge of structural analysis to Level HE3.  An understanding of serviceability and limit state code requirements for masonry.

Module Aims

The module is designed to provide an understanding of the methods of analysis and design of masonry structures in accordance with BS 5628: part 1, 2 and 3 and to give an introduction to BS EN 1996.  A further aim of the module is to enhance student understanding of the health and safety aspects associated with the design and construction of masonry structures.  A further aim of the module is to enhance student understanding of the health and safety aspects associated with the design and construction of masonry structures.

Learning Outcomes

On the successful completion of this module, the student will;

 

·       have acquired an advanced and comprehensive overview of the behaviour of masonry structures under load.

 

be able to carry out, analysis and design of typical buildings and structural elements in accordance with standard procedures.

Module Content

Introduction to masonry and masonry construction.

 

Modern masonry construction.

 

Codes, standards and regulations.

 

Design for vertical load.

 

Design for lateral load.

 

Combined loads. Concentrated loads. Accidental damage.

 

Reinforced masonry.

 

Other design considerations.

 

Design of basements.

 

Eurocode 6 :  Introduction and discussion.

Methods of Teaching/Learning

 20 hrs lectures, 10 hrs tutorial/question classes/self assessment questions.  38 hrs assignment work, 2 hrs examination and 80 hrs independent learning.
