Module Aims
To enable students to develop and demonstrate:

 

  • Understanding of the principles of transport appraisal, including cost-benefit analysis.

     

  • Appreciation of the relationship between accessibility and social exclusion and of the measures likely to reduce social exclusion.

     

  • Understanding of the link between speed and safety.

     

  • Understanding of the problems of air quality and appreciation of the methods of analysis.
  • A basic knowledge of noise measurement and the issues relating to traffic.
Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the module, students should be able to:

 

  • Develop an appraisal framework from defined objectives and qualitatively assess the implications of a range of transport interventions.

     

  • Undertake a cost-benefit analysis from simple traffic model outputs and assess the impacts of assumptions on traffic growth and discount rates.

     

  • Identify the causes of social exclusion and explain the measures and policies that can reduce the impact. Undertake a simple accessibility audit.

     

  • Describe speed control measures and evaluate their effectiveness in different. circumstances. Outline and justify a speed management strategy for a given area.

     

  • Explain how air quality standards are linked to health and climate change.

     

  • Estimate concentrations of pollutants from traffic flows on a simple network.

     

  • Comment on the principles of air quality modelling and the limitations.

     

  • Propose action to ameliorate poor air quality in a given case study.

     

  • Measure noise levels and comment on the accuracy of the data.

     

  • Calculate the noise level resulting from traffic flow at a receptor.

     

  • Assess a case study where road noise is a problem and propose measures to mitigate the impact of the noise.
  • Understand the requirement for transport planning activities to promote sustainable development.
