Module Overview
Prerequisites/Co-requisites

Students must have completed at least four modules prior to the commencement of their internship.
Module Aims
The internship is an elective module for full-time MSc students, and is intended to complement the students’ academic work with valuable practical experience in industry, government agencies, non-governmental organisations (NGO) or environmental research centres. The internship offers students a unique opportunity to gain hands-on and meaningful work experience, learn how to work co-operatively with others, obtain a better perspective of the career field and enhance employment opportunities. Students will work on specific projects at their placement agency and will have the opportunity to use and test some of the analytical skills they acquired from their training leading to the internship period. This module may also provide students with the opportunity to think ahead and develop project ideas for their MSc dissertation.
Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:

•           develop workplace-related interpersonal skills;

•           gain an experience of environmental management issues in the UK and EU;

•           demonstrate an awareness of the political, resource and practical constraints on the practice of environmental management;

•           gain a clearer understanding of the relationship between the academic training and its practical application in a real setting.
Module Content
The core of this module is the six to eight-week placement spent in supervised work in environment-related work. The placement may be:
•           industrial: with a firm or company engaged in environmental management or with activities directly affecting the environment;
•           local authority and other public agency engaged in sustainabilty and agenda 21 issues;
•           NGOs, environmental pressure groups and non-profit advocacy organisations engaged in work related to environmental degradation; preserving biological diversity, and stakeholder participatory action;
•           public health organisations;
•           media outlets such as the BBC.

The range of activities undertaken during the internship will be agreed between the placing organisation and CES to ensure that the experience undertaken will permit the achievement of the learning goals.
Methods of Teaching/Learning

Each intern will be assigned an agency representative who will act as supervisors who will provide guidance to the intern and ensure his/her time is focused on substantive work and activities, with academic guidance and support provided by the student's personal tutor. Students are expected to keep a daily diary of work experience and produce a report on the project carried out during the placement. A seminar series will be organised following the placements to bring students together to discuss and share their experiences with their peers.
