Module Aims |
To provide students with an understanding of the English law system, with particular relevance to environmental law. |

Learning Outcomes |
On successful completion of this module, students will understand:
- legal procedures and the judicial process.
- The interaction between legal proof and scientific evidence.
- The origins and principles underpinning European and UK policy and legislation.
- The structure of the substantive environmental laws in the UK covering waste, water and atmospheric pollution.

Module Content |
The civil courts: actions for damages
Judicial review;
The criminal courts: roles of evidence; prosecuting and defending environmental claims; court-room scenario;
Planning inquiries: practice and procedure; participative exercise;
Waste management law and packaging;
Water, atmospheric pollution and planning law.

Methods of Teaching/Learning |
Lectures, court-room scenario, discussion tutorials, mock inquiry.
