Module Overview
Prerequisites/Co-requisites

A sound basic knowledge of structural analysis to Level HE3;  some experience of designing simple reinforced concrete sections and elements to satisfy both serviceability and limit state code requirements.

Module Aims

The module is designed to provide an understanding of the methods of analysis and design of reinforced concrete buildings structures in accordance with BS EN 1992 and associated European codes.  A further aim of the module is to enhance student understanding of the health and safety aspects associated with the design and construction of reinforced concrete structures.

Learning Outcomes

On the successful completion of this module, the student will:

·       have acquired a comprehensive overview of the behaviour of concrete buildings under load.

be able to carry out routine conception, analysis and design of typical buildings and structural elements in accordance with standard procedures.

Module Content

Code requirements for fire safety, robustness, stability and durability

Structural forms and layout of low and high-rise reinforced concrete buildings

Braced and unbraced frames.  Analysis of shear walls.

Load combinations and load patterns.  Moment distribution and re-distribution.

Design for Flexure, shear, deflection and crack control in beams and slabs.

Design of short and slender columns
Design of foundations.
