Module Overview |
This module aims to develop the participants’ knowledge of key concepts in environmental health as they apply to water quality management and control. This will be done by providing training in the principles and methods required for monitoring, managing and preventing health problems related to the water cycle in both the developed and developing world. |
|
|
Prerequisites/Co-requisites |
A knowledge of applied chemistry and microbiology to Level HE3 or module ENGM055 |
|
|
Module Aims |
· To develop the participants’ knowledge of key concepts in environmental health as they apply to water quality management and control
· To provide a theoretical and practical training in the principles and methods required for monitoring, managing and preventing health problems related to the water cycle.
· To ensure that the students have access to, and a good knowledge of, the key reference publications related to the water-related diseases
To compare and contrast the public health/water supply issues in the developed and developing world |
|
|
Learning Outcomes |
On successful completion of the module, you will be able to:
advise water and public health organisations on managing water resources, water supplies and sanitation to minimise health risks |
|
|
Module Content |
Water-related diseases: concepts in applied ecology for the prevention of disease
Epidemiology of waterborne disease
Pathogens: bacteria, viruses and parasites
Water quality control and surveillance: principles and practice
Isolation of sanitary indictor bacteria (practical methods)
Identification of bacteria (practical methods)
Sanitary bacteriology (practical methods)
