Module Overview

Prerequisites/Co-requisites

This module will operate at MEng level and is a compulsory module for MEng students; BEng students are welcome to take this module as an option and should be able to cope with the material, provided they have achieved above 40% in ENG1001, ENG1008, ENG2002 and ENG2016 (or equivalent modules).

Module Aims

To study some aspects of engineering mechanics with an emphasis on the theoretical and mathematical background.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the module students should be able to:

Deal with vectors and tensors.

Deal with 2D and 3D elasticity including yield criteria.

Deal with elastic plate theory and torsion of beams.

Module Content

Scalars, Vectors and Tensors: 2D and 3D Cartesian tensors, transformation of axes, principal values and invariants.

Plane stress:  Equilibrium, compatibility, material rules, simple solutions, visualisation of stress fields.

Plate theory: bending and twisting moments, curvature and twist, equilibrium equation, simple solutions, boundary conditions.

3D Elasticity: Yield criteria.

Beam theory:  Distortion and warping, torsion of solid and thin wall sections.

Methods of Teaching/Learning

24 hours of lectures, 12 hours of tutorial classes, and 64 hours independent learning.

Total student learning time 100 hours.
