Module Overview

This module is one of a suite of modules covering all aspect of chemical engineering process and equipment design.  The design of a chemical process paying appropriate consideration to sustainability, economic and operational feasibility and engineering practicality is a key skill for chemical engineers and requires a robust understanding of all aspects of Chemical Engineering.  Working in groups with other BEng students from the Chemical Engineering programme you will design a chemical process working from a comprehensive brief.

Prerequisites/Co-requisites
Normal Progression requirements from level HE2 of the Chemical Engineering programmes or equivalent.
Module Aims

To provide students with:

·         a systematic understanding and critical awareness of process design and its importance in chemical industry

·         the experience of integrating the design methods and fundamental analysis taught in earlier modules by completing an overall plant process design in cooperation with a small group  other MEng students

·         a comprehensive understanding of the complexity of interactions which must be reconciled during the design process

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module, you will be able to:

·         confidently analyse the factors involved in completing the mass and energy balances of a complex chemical process, the principles of plant start-up and shut-down and the health and safety considerations inherent to the process design

·         confidently specify materials of construction of equipment items and analyse how these may affect the selection of process parameters;

·         work effectively as a member of a design team converting a design brief into a feasible process design

·         effectively analyse the interaction between process requirements and practical equipment design

·         identify and correctly interpret the essential Safety and Health topics related to process plant design and operation
