Module Overview
This module introduces a range of materials and processes used in a variety of engineering applications, with examples from taken from aerospace, mechanical and medical engineering.
Prerequisites/Co-requisites

Normal entry requirements for level 3 of the degree programme.

Module Aims

To provide students with:

  • an introduction to ceramics, composites, polymers and surface engineered materials.

  • a knowledge of the major material types, processing routes, key properties and the methods by which these are evaluated, and the principal application areas, within each sub-group.

  • where appropriate, a quantitative framework for the evaluation of key aspects of materials processing and/or performance

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the module, you will  be able to:

·         identify the materials and processes that are used in a range of engineering applications,

·         provide a rationale for their use, with reference to the underlying processing -structure – property relationships, and

  • where appropriate, use quantitative data to support your reasoning.
