| Module Overview |
| Engineers must operate within a legal and professional framework, with regard to contracts, employment, environmental impact and many other aspects of the engineering business. This module explores the key areas of the law encountered by professional engineers and also the concept of professionalism for an engineer. |

| Module Aims |
| To extend the general acquaintance with business studies gained previously into the fields of Law and Society so that the students can understand the liabilities of a professional engineer and his employer and can understand the requirements of the market place for product design and maintenance. |

| Learning Outcomes |
By the end of the module, students should be able to :
• operate as a professional engineer within the law
• communicate with marketing professionals
• interpret, and communicate using, appropriate legal terminology

| Module Content |
Law:
Personnel of the Law, evidence and proof, procedure in action, role of authority, sources of law, legal and natural persons.
Essentials of contract, validity and discharge of contracts. effect of writing. remedies for breach, outline of law of sales.
Principles of law of tort and crime, the law of employment.
Trade secrets, patents.
Environmental law, from the Common Law Nuisance to modern statutory law.
Society:
The structure of government and public institutions and the implications for professional engineers

20 hrs of lectures, 80 hrs of independent learning.
Total student learning time 100 hours.
The coursework will consist of two equally weighted pieces of work.
