Module Overview |
The HE3 Design project provides an opportunity to the student working on a group based project and apply the knowledge they learnt to a customer specified product/system. |
|
|
Prerequisites/Co-requisites |
Completion of the progress requirements of Level HE2 & Modules ENG1006, ENG1058, ENG1008 and ENG2027 or equivalent |
|
|
Module Aims |
To provide an opportunity for design teamwork in undertaking a substantial project involving concept and detail design within simulated industrial deadlines. |
|
|
Learning Outcomes |
The students will have experienced the design procedure and applied both interpersonal skills and analytical knowledge to an original and customer specified problem and to fit them for practice as professional engineers in the design environment.

Module Content |
Students of mixed aptitude, ability and interest, work in groups of 5 to 8 on a design project to initial outline specifications supplied by a project 'customer' according to relevant the course of the student (for example, medical engineering students are likely to be involved in a medical engineering related project).
The first part of the project usually involves a feasibility study, leading to a Design Specification.
In the second part the groups undertake a detailed design exercise based on selected areas of the feasibility study. This leads to a full report and a presentation.
Design is controlled and progressed through group meetings at which group members rotate in the positions of chairman and secretary.
Design work is concentrated in the first 12 weeks of the Autumn Semester. There is a Group Presentation in Week 12, with a final report submitted before the presentation.

Methods of Teaching/Learning |
Students will operate in groups of about 5-8 with a staff adviser and will undertake the design of a system or product to a given outline requirement. Total student learning time 200 hours.
* Mark breakdown: Group report (40%), Individual performance (40%) & Group oral presentation (20%) |
