Group assignment – students to design an activity suitable for skills development in team working and leadership, and to explain in the form of a report, how the activity serves the desired purpose.

Individual assignment – written self-evaluation of students’ performance as individuals, also discussion of performance of any teams the students have been in and the leadership of those teams. Including suitable references to literature (see selected texts for suggestions)

Completion of the progress requirements of Level HE1

Module Aims
  • To introduce and to develop understanding of concepts in team working, leadership and management.
  • To give the students experience of working in teams and adopting leadership roles.
  • To expose the students to concepts of management and to give experience in conducting meetings and in negotiation.
Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the module, students should be able to:

  • Understand how teams are formed, develop and dissolve.
  • Understand the different roles performed by individuals in a team.
  • work effectively in teams of individuals with similar levels of experience.
  • Understand different approaches to leadership.

  • Approaches to leadership – qualities approach, situational approach, functional approach
  • Action-centred leadership and the leader’s functions

  • Task definition and goal-setting

Methods of Teaching/Learning

Teams & Teamwork, leadership sections: based around short lectures, group exercises, discussion and review sessions

Management section: a more traditional lecture basis than the previous sections, but containing experiential sessions on business meetings and negotiations

10 hours lectures, 15 hours practical sessions, and 75 hours independent learning.

Total student learning time 100 hours.
