Module Overview

To introduce students to the design of the main civil engineering materials and the code procedures associated with structural design

Prerequisites/Co-requisites

Completion of the progress requirements of Level HE1 and Modules ENG1014 & 1052

Module Aims

To introduce basic design philosophies and procedures used in the design of reinforced concrete, steel, timber and masonry structures.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the module students will be able to :

·         understand the basic principles behind codified design methods:

·         design, draw and provide outline details for concrete beams, solid slabs and short columns.

·         design steel beams, columns and connections of a multi-storey building frame.

·         design sawn timber beams; glulam timber beams and tension / compression members

·         design masonry walls under simple vertical and lateral loadings.

·         appreciate the role of the designer in construction.

Module Content

Reinforced Concrete Design

Bending and shear in beams - types of failure, analysis and design

Slabs - one and two-way spanning slabs.

Columns - braced and unbraced, effective height, slenderness, short column design using charts.

Reinforcement provision - types and sizes, maximum and minimum areas, cover, bar spacing.

Steelwork design

Beams – restrained and unrestrained beams, local instability, lateral-torsional buckling

Columns – axially-loaded column behaviour, effective lengths, columns in multi-storey buildings

Bolted connections – axial and moment connections

Welded connections – axial and moment connections

Detailing beams and columns

Timber design

Sawn Timber Joists – timber stresses, modification factors for bending and tension.

Glulam – modification factors, finger joints.

Columns - axial loading, combined actions.

Masonry design

Materials - bricks, concrete blocks, mortar, design factors.

Vertical Loading – buckling and bearing.

Lateral Loading – single and two way spanning walls under lateral load..

Methods of Teaching/Learning

24 hours of lectures, 20 hours of tutorial classes, and 56 hours independent learning.

Total student learning time 100 hours.
