Module Overview |
The HE1 Design project provides an opportunity to the student working on a group based project and apply the knowledge they learnt to a customer specified product/system.
Prerequisites/Co-requisites |
Normal entry requirements for degree course in Engineering
Module Aims |
To provide an understanding of the complete engineering product development process through participation in a group design project involving design, manufacture and evaluation of a prototype product.
Learning Outcomes |
The students will have experienced the design procedure and applied the skills they learnt in the autumn semester to an original and customer specified problem, through which students will be enlightened by importance of engineering knowledge and skills.
Module Content |
Students will have experienced the entirety of the design process and will have learned the need for a structured approach and the place of analysis within it. Working as a group, 5-7 students will be assigned a project most relating to their course (for example, medical engineering student will have a medical engineering related DME project).
Overseen by academic supervisors, the groups will produce, by considering initial need, a design specification, manufacturing drawings, production plan and undertaking the manufacture and finally evaluation of the product.
A final report will have been produced documenting the whole process. They will have overcome the problems of working as a group and will perceive the benefits of group work in an engineering context.
Design work is concentrated in the first 10 weeks of the semester and the manufacture and evaluation will be carried in the last 5 weeks of the semester
