Module Overview
This is a Level 3 module for English for International Communication. It is taught over one semester, two contact hours per teaching week. Attendance is compulsory.
Prerequisites/Co-requisites
Successful completion of HE 2 or equivalent
Module Aims
The module will provide students with: 
  • the linguistic skills necessary to communicate effectively in spoken and written modes on aspects of business and the economy in the United Kingdom.
  • Knowledge and understanding of economic aspects of the British economy and of business in contemporary United Kingdom
  • Appreciation of differences between the UK economy and other economies.
  • Skills to work in or collaborate with industries and businesses in the United Kingdom.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
  • read, understand and evaluate a variety of business and economics texts
  • critically engage in discussions of the economy and business in the United Kingdom.
  • extract business and economic terms from the texts under examination and apply them when communicating in business settings.
  • appreciate the structure of the British economy, and the significance of its role in the global economy.

Methods of Teaching/Learning
Teaching will be in small groups. The stimulus material used will be drawn from a variety of sources, including audio and video media, newspapers and magazines, books and reference works. Students are expected to take part in negotiations, give presentations, submit pieces of writing and to engage in self and peer-assessment. Students are also required to work collaboratively in class and in the preparation for class.
